How Calorie Burn is Calculated

Calorie burn depends on three main factors:

  • Body weight: Heavier people burn more calories doing the same activity
  • Activity intensity: More vigorous activities burn more calories
  • Duration: Longer sessions burn more total calories

MET Values

This calculator uses MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values, which represent how much energy an activity requires compared to resting. For example:

  • Sitting = 1 MET (baseline)
  • Walking moderately = 4.5 METs (4.5× resting metabolic rate)
  • Running fast = 13.5 METs (13.5× resting metabolic rate)

These are estimates based on average values. Actual calorie burn varies based on fitness level, muscle mass, age, and other individual factors. Use these numbers as a guide, not an exact measurement.
